Viral animation of a Spinosaurus with a sword is now a video game, Dinoblade closed out today's Six One Indie Showcase

Six One Indie's video game showcase had „one more thing” at the end, a trailer for Dinoblade, an action RPG about dinosaurs fighting with giant swords.

Today, the Six One Indie Showcase featured dozens of indie games over its hour-long runtime. But they closed out the showcase with one special announcement. You may sometime over the last years coming across a short clip on social media of a Spinosaurus swinging a Buster Sword. The animator who created that viral clip has been working on turning it into a game where dinosaurs get into sword fights. The trailer for Dinoblade closed out the showcase today, and it has so much of the same style that made that original viral clip so popular in the first place.

Dinosaurs with swords: Dinoblade is the “one more thing” at the Six One Indie showcase

Jean Nguyen formed the studio Team Spino LLC to put this game out there, while also working as a Senior Gameplay Animator at Sucker Punch, the studio behind inFamous series. After the trailer first premiered, Nguyen shared some of the story of how this game came to be. After mentioning the viral clip, he says, “…that was created just to make my portfolio better, but it went viral, and people kept asking for a game, so here we are.” If you make something that looks like it would be a cool video game, the people won’t rest until they get what they want.

The trailer only runs for about thirty seconds, but it gives a glimpse of what to expect from Dinoblade. You play as a Spinosaurus holding a great sword in its mouth. You’ll also encounter other dinosaurs with weapons, what looks like a Carnotaurus holding a scythe, and of course, a huge Tyrannosaurus Rex with a matching giant sword. The combat reminded viewers of games like Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry, with an article on VICE calling it “Dinosaur May Cry.” Several moments during the trailer had two dinosaurs locking blades in a fierce battle.

It was not hard to spot much of the same fluid and epic movement styles that made the original clip so popular. There’s still a lot to learn about this game, such as how the combat will work and if a story that ties all these epic encounters together. Dinoblade’s Steam page gives some hints, saying, “Dinoblade is an action RPG game that takes place right after a major event that changes what we know about Dinosaurs. Set out on a journey as a young Spinosaurus that uses a Great Sword fighting against other Dinosaurs that use weapons to prevent an extinction.” So there is an adventure here at least, not just action. Not that I would complain if it was just dinosaur action.

There is no release date or demo yet, but I look forward to learning more. Since this is an indie title, we may have to be patient for another year or two. But plenty of people in the live chat and YouTube comments explained how they had been following this game’s creator on social media for a long time, so that could be a great way to keep up with the latest news regarding Dinoblade. To show your interest and , you can wishlist the game now on Steam.
