Bleak Sword is an action game with roguelike elements. It was developed by the independent studio more8bit and published by Devolver Digital. The game debuted on the iOS in 2019, soon after receiving an expanded edition titled Bleak Sword DX, to be released on other platforms.
Bleak Sword takes place in a grim fantasy world. The game's protagonist is tasked with dispelling the titular sword's curse. To do so, he must face hordes of horrifying creatures.
The gameplay of Bleak Sword is shown from the top-down perspective. The game is divided into chapters and takes place in a variety of gloomy areas, in which we fight various enemies. During each dynamic encounter we can use melee weapons, spells and combat skills. To succeed we must stay mobile, avoid enemy blows and look out for any weak spots or gaps in their defenses.
The graphics of Bleak Sword have been made with the use of pixel art, their most distinctive feature being the color scheme, dominated by black, white and occasional bright "neon" red. The diaroma-levels may also be appealing. The game's atmospheric soundtrack was composed by Jim Guthri.
Bleak Sword DX features upgraded mechanics, controls and enemy AI, as well as visuals. The updated release features three new modes; boss rush, arena fight and a special version of the campaign, the stages of which are traversed in a random order. The game also includes all the previously released DLC, introducing new chapters and enemies.

Game Ratings for Bleak Sword DX Video Game.
Digital Chumps: 9 / 10 by Nathaniel Stevens
Bleak Sword DX is a gorgeous, nostalgic, and clever game for something built in a simplified structural way. More8Bit did a superb job of creating a fast gameplay environment while also maintaining creativity with its enemies and maps. While it may not seem like much, it has some moxie to it. Be forewarned, though, it also contains a heavy amount of frustration.
Niche Gamer: 6 / 10 by Fingal Belmont
Bleak Sword DX falls short of greatness due to its questionable adherence to minimalism. It comes close to being interesting, but the lack of variety keeps it boring. Bleak Sword DX‘s strengths are its low barrier to entry and how it pushes the player forward with its casual design.

Bleak Sword is quick and to the point. Sometimes that’s all you need.
