A Polish vehicular action game, starring nationally iconic cars from the 1970s and the 1980s battling on postapocalyptic wastelands. The old-school 3D visuals of Fumes resemble games released on the first PlayStation.
Fumes is a Polish game "inspired by the golden age of vehicular combat games", series such as Interstate. It's a singleplayer, third-person game, in which we drive cars equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers and all sorts of different weapons. The game was created by a very small team.
The game is set in procedurally generated postapocalyptic wastelands roamed by gangs of hostile drivers. Exploration is rather secondary, combat being the game's main focus.
We can choose from all sorts of vehicles, and though none are officially licensed, they're inspired by cars that were common in Poland in the 1970s and 1980s, such as the Fiat 126p.
The vehicles have unique abilities and can be customized to our liking, equipped with all sorts of weapons. Better parts can be acquired by defeating bosses.
The driving system in Fumes is heavily arcadey, inspired by old rally games.
Visually, Fumes is also inspired by "the genre's golden age" - the textures and models are simple, resembling those made in the 1990s; flames take the form of 2D sprites and there's fog that limits our field of view.
