Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the sixth main part of the series of games with RPG and arcade elements, launched in 2003. Unlike previous installments of the series, created by the AlphaDream studio that existed from 2000-2019, this game was developed directly by Nintendo, the company overseeing the brand.

Plot

As the title suggests, the main characters of Mario & Luigi Brothership are the brothers Mario and Luigi. The protagonists find themselves on a piece of land known as Shipshape, which is partly a ship and partly an island, from where they go on a journey around the vast world of Concordia. Our heroes experience various adventures and meet both old acquaintances from the Mushroom Kingdom, like Peach or Bowser, as well as completely new characters, led by Connie and Snoutlet.

Mario and Luigi: Brothership Review: Sailing and Waiting

The iconic plumbers are back for their latest adventure since 2015, and their first one is on consoles. What could be their biggest adventure yet is also one that tends to drag more than it should.

COGconnected: 75 / 100 by James Paley

This game suffers when subjected to a reviewer’s brutal pacing. Maybe if I hadn’t been racing towards the finish line, the endless tiny loading screens wouldn’t have bothered me as much. I was also forced to discard a lot of the side content. It’s not super compelling stuff, but the act of completing it can be pretty relaxing. Searching for Sprite Bulbs scratches that completionist itch in a big way. Plus, the game is beautiful and the battles are a lot of fun. I still wish the puzzles weren’t so frustrating for me. But again, they benefit from more patience than I could spare. My momentum while playing felt wobbly and uneven, but this is still a well-crafted game. Perhaps your time (if you can offer more of it than me) will be well-spent playing Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Impulsegamer: 3.9 / 5 by Nay Clark

As awkward as a game that Mario & Luigi: Brothership can be, you can't beat the entertainment you will have with it. The turtle-paced progression, quick gameplay gimmicks, and unwieldy concise worldbuilding can be disheartening, but when a game is fun…a game is fun! The extremely rewarding combat and layers of strategy is a blast. The graphics are impressive, the soundtrack is outstanding, and the moments where Luigi gets to shine are indubitably adorable. Anchors aweigh and cast off into the grand voyages of high-spirited and loquacious antics in Mario & Luigi: Brothership!

But Why Tho?: 7 / 10 by Kyle Foley

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is an exciting, albeit imperfect adventure that brings the Mario Bros. to a whole new world. There is plenty to see and do and it is well worth taking the time to slow down and immerse yourself in this brand new adventure.
