Primal Carnage: Extinction for PC and PS4 is an online action game, which places a team of soldiers against a team of bloodthirsty dinosaurs. The game brings a continuation to Primal Carnage (2012) and was created by Circle 5 - an independent studio, which emerged from the modders' community. The team took over the development of the franchise as a result of a difference in opinions as to the future of the series, which divided the creators of the original game (Lukewarm Media). Interestingly, Circle 5 was supposed to finish the originally planned, single-player sequel, which was to become Primal Carnage: Genesis. However, the project was too ambitious for the inexperienced studio and it was eventually cancelled. Instead, a strictly multiplayer continuation was brought about in cooperation with Pub Games – an Australian developer.
The game features sceneries similar to what was present in the previous installment. Thus the player is taken to a tropical island, which as a result of an unsuccessful military experiment, got dominated by different species of huge, pre-historic reptiles. The player can pick either of the sides (mercenaries or dinosaurs). Equipped with deadly weapons, the mercenaries want to eliminate the bloodthirsty creatures and reclaim control over the island.
The experience is based on a system of classes, which is typical for online titles. The mercenaries come in 5 different specialties differing both in their weapons and equipment. When playing as a dinosaur however, one can choose from 9 most popular species. Among them, the player can find specimens that prefer to remain stealthy, perform deadly charges, or attack from above (flying species). The character development system present does not go beyond the standards of the genre, allowing to unlock new kinds of weapons and useful gadgets as the player gains experience. Also, the creators included many skins and character modification opportunities available for both the sides of the conflict.
The game features about a dozen of maps. On its release, Primal Carnage: Extinction offered two main modes, including the classic team deathmatch and the original Get to the Chopper mode. However, new game modes were introduced in post-release updates.
Similar to the original game, Primal Carnage: Extinction for PC and PS4 is powered by the Unreal Engine, which guarantees high visual quality. Depending on the side picked, action is viewed from the first-person perspective (humans) or in the TPP mode (dinosaurs).
