Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Video Game Series
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is a series of tactical first-person perspective (FPP) shooters based on a novel written by Tom Clancy. The series was started by the Red Storm studio with publishing from Ubisoft, and for many years the studio was responsible for the main installments of the series; the change of producer came after part of the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown from 2005.Further development of the brand was handled by other development teams from under the wings of Ubisoft.
The first game in the series: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six was released in 1998, shortly after the release of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. The title was originally released for PC, but due to considerable interest among gamers it also lived to see ports intended for Nintendo 64 and PlayStation consoles (1999), as well as DreamCast and Game Boy Color (2000). In 1999, a new installment of the series hit store shelves - Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, was released for PC and PlayStation and DreamCast consoles; just a year later, an add-on was released for it Urban Operations (2000), which came to PC and DreamCast minus PlayStation. The years 2000 and 2001 brought three products in the series that premiered only on PC. Two standalone expansions for Rogue Spear with the subtitles Covert Ops Essentials and Black Thorn, and released only in South Korea Rainbow Six: Take-Down - Missions in Korea. For the full-fledged third installment - Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield - fans had to wait until 2003. It was released on PC and Xbox, PS2 and GameCube consoles, as well as on cell phones. Interestingly, the console versions lost the subtitle Raven Shield and were marketed simply as Rainbow Six 3. Also this part was enhanced with add-ons: Athena Sword (2004), Black Arrow (2004) and Iron Wrath (2005). They are exclusive to personal computers, except for Black Arrow, which came exclusively to the Xbox platform. In 2003, players also got the first installment of the series aimed exclusively at cell phones, namely. Rainbow Six: Broken Wings, followed a year later by another one subtitled Urban Crisis. A new chapter in the history of the series opened with the game Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown released in 2005 on PS2, Xbox and GameCube consoles, and in 2006 on PC. It introduced a number of changes in gameplay mechanics (including, controversially for many fans, the abandonment of tactical mission planning) and was Red Storm studio's farewell to the series. Subsequent installments of the series were prepared by other Ubisoft development studios, including Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec. In 2006, as an exclusive title for the Xbox console, was released Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Critical Hour. The same year also saw the development of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, coming to PC and X360, while in 2007 it was released for PS3 and PSP. Just a year later, gamers could enjoy the sequel to Vegas, more specifically Vegas 2. The title had a simultaneous release on PC, PS3 and X360. After a 3-year hiatus, in 2011, the series came with another fully mobile installment subtitled Shadow Vanguard. Fans had to wait 4 years for the next part of the series, as Rainbow Six Siege was created in 2015 and came simultaneously to PC, PS4 and XONE, while in 2020, on the occasion of the entry of the 9th generation of consoles (XSX and PS5), the game came to them as well. Siege is the first installment fully focused on multiplayer gameplay. In 2022, the following hit store shelves (physical and digital) Rainbow Six Extraction, which was released on PC and 8th and 9th generation consoles (PS4, PS5, XOne and XSX).
The plot axis of all games in the series Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six are the actions of the title's fictional anti-terrorist unit, composed of highly trained soldiers representing various NATO (and other) countries. The player most often takes on the role of the commander of one of the operational groups, and his task is to carry out actions against terrorist individuals and organizations. The action of the game always takes place in the not-too-distant-future since the game was released.
What distinguished the initial games of the series Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six against competing tactical FPSs, was the operation planning stage, allowing to "program" soldiers. This element, as "too complicated," was completely removed in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, which caused controversy among quite a few fans.
One of the interesting facts related to the series Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is the "Polish accent" in the person of Kazimiera "Kamikazi" Rakuzanka. The former GROM officer appears in three installments of the series: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear i Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six takes us back to the years 1996-2000. NATO forces decided to create a new special unit to fight terrorism, which was named Rainbow. The unit's first task is to stop eco-terrorists. The title is distinguished from other shooters by the high complexity of the tactical layer. Before each mission, the player selects operators, their equipment, and plans the movements of AI-led strike groups. W Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six every bullet counts, and one well-fired bullet can make an opponent die, but keep in mind that this works the other way as well.
Storyline Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear revolves around the threat of illegal nuclear weapons. After the collapse of the USSR, a lot of military equipment, including sizable amounts of plutonium, ended up on the black market. A Russian gangster decided to start selling it to terrorist organizations in the form of small bombs the size of a suitcase. Once again Rainbow has to face the threat. The title did not bring a revolution in gameplay; the production is largely based on the solutions of its predecessor, focusing on an expanded tactical mode and realism.
The third full-fledged installment of the series, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, takes us to the year 2005, with an elite anti-terrorist squad fighting a neo-fascist organization that wants to start a worldwide revolution. Despite the still strong tactical and realistic element, the third part of the series slowly began to introduce elements known from popular action shooters like Counter Strike, such as larger sights and magazines.
Story axis Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown is based on the threat of a nanotech virus that has fallen into the wrong hands. The game aroused a lot of controversy among fans, because as the first part of the series it completely abandoned the planning phase of our squad's movements. In addition, the title introduced saves at any time, something that was also in vain in previous installments. It should be noted that the multiplayer modes in Lockdown differ significantly between versions for different platforms.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Critical Hour introduces us to the story of the Rainbow team commander. The aging soldier retires, while recalling the missions he took part in. It should be noted that the title refers in its formula to the classic installments of the series. The tactical phase of the gameplay returns, and many realistic elements that were abandoned in Lockdown, such as the effect of wounds and gear on shooting accuracy.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas takes place mostly in the titular city, which is under attack by terrorists. The Rainbow team is sent in to bring the situation under control. Of course, nothing is as simple as it seems at first glance, and the case has a second bottom. The game has introduced several novelties. The ability to save the game at any time was abandoned and checkpoints were introduced instead. In addition, the health system was also changed, which was now able to regenerate when our character was not under fire. Still, some weapons (e.g. grenades) or close bursts from higher-powered weapons could kill the player instantly.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is a direct sequel and partly a prequel to the previous installment of the series. The game's action takes place before, during and after the events presented in Vegas. In the continuation some of the well-known characters from the previous part return. The plot of the title focuses on the search for a chemical bomb that fell into the hands of terrorists. In Vegas 2, the multiplayer segment has been significantly developed. The installment allows us to create our own character, which can be used in single- and multiplayer modes. The title also introduced several novelties, for example, selected missions have a day and night mode implemented, while some shields can be destroyed.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is the first game in the series focused exclusively on multiplayer. The title allows players to take on the role of of anti-terrorist groups from around the world and face off against each other. The selected operators differ in their equipment and special skills. The production also boasts that many elements of the environment can be destroyed or shot through, which introduces new tactical possibilities. The title has a fairly wide selection of separate game modes, which present players with different challenges and add variety to the gameplay.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Extraction departs somewhat in climate from what we can observe in other installments of the series. In the game, together with up to two other friends, we will face the challenge of confronting a mysterious parasite. Extraction introduces many elements that bring the title closer to survival horror.
